Q. We are having about 50 guests at our vow renewal. How do I determine how big of cake we need?

A. While not all of your guests will probably eat cake, it’s better to play it safe than sorry when deciding on how much cake to order. Plus, you’ll want the cake to look nice in photos!  Be sure to pick layer sizes that are at least 3-5 inches different so you have a nice ledge effect.

The standard slice of cake is approximately 8 cubic inches or 4 X 2 X 1 inches. Each round tier is comprised of two layers of cake with frosting between each layer.

So for 50 guests, assuming that you don’t want to keep the top layer, you may want to choose 5″, 8″, and 11″ layers or 8″ and 12″ layers.

Be sure to discuss your particular desires with your baker so you get the most beautiful, delicious cake possible in the right quantity!

For your reference, here is a chart with the most common layer sizes.
